Hey….here goes the tale of my unexpected dream-come-true that I promised yesterday I would tell you. Some dreams that come true are so small they may seem like no big deal except to the person with the dream. Other dreams that come true are fantastic! Amazing! Unbelievable! Once-in-a-lifetime! My unexpected dream-come-true falls into the second category…it truly is amazing, even if you don’t know me. It’s the kind of thing that will make you think….WOW, things like that really do happen!

I think it was March of last year. I was in the habit of listening to internet radio while I did office work for a client. I listened to several stations, depending on my mood, one of which was a local 70′s and 80′s rock station. One day when I signed on, there was an advertisement to sign up to win “a week on a private island with 3 of your friends”. Maybe it was one of the books I read as a child, or maybe it was because I grew up in a bitterly cold, windy town in Wyoming, but I have always loved tropical islands. I have been to a couple of them in my life…for brief visits…shuffling my toes through the glorious warm sand, looking for shells, playing in the waves…and I always dreamed of spending much more time in tropical climes. So this was a no-brainer. I signed up! Then I forgot about it.

And you guessed it….I WON!!! Five months later – in August – I got a call that I was a semi-finalist in the contest. I was told to be at a certain restaurant on Saturday morning for the final drawing, and I had to be present to win. Needless to say, I showed up. My client even showed up….because I was so certain I was going to win she said she thought I might be right. Out of 130 semi-finalists, 10 names were drawn that morning to compete for the grand prize. The 10 finalists had to dig through sand-filled play pools for the winning token, and the grand prize winner was ME!!!

So this Friday my husband, sister, brother-in-law and I fly to Marathon, Florida (in the Keys) where we will take our 19-foot Boston Whaler to Seabird Key to live the island life for a week. It is a 10-acre island with a luxury beach house, two docks, and all the amenities and play equipment anyone could want, shared only by a bird sanctuary. Yes, dreams can and do come true. Wait a minute, I have to go pinch myself…..
