Working From Home vs. Marooned on a Tropical Island

· No Comments · Thoughts and Viewpoints

Probably some of you have thought I was, indeed, marooned on a tropical island, since I haven’t been heard from since leaving for my private island trip. Alas, no, we were not marooned and we had to return. Family obligations and real life immediately took their toll and it has taken me this long to get back on track!

The island was an awesome, unbelievable fantasy. First, I couldn’t believe I had won and was actually going there, then I was there and couldn’t believe it was real, and now I am back and I can’t believe it all really happened.

I had pictured a sandy beach with big waves and pounding surf, but there is no surf in the Florida Keys due to the reefs surrounding the islets, so there was just a small beach where they have to bring the sand in from Miami…but it was still a very nice beach. The actuality of the the island is – which I didn’t even imagine – the most beautiful botanical garden I have ever seen.

Plants and flowers from all around the world are artfully planted throughout, labeled as to what they are. There were frangipani, coconuts, bananas (we ate a couple), mangos, figs, palms, cacti (blooming), sea grapes…..I can’t begin to name them all. The house was all built of cypress with no glass in the windows, merely screens and adjustable shutters.

There was an outdoor open-air kitchen with a Viking BBQ, frig, sink, dishes, glasses, cutlery, the works. AND my sister and brother-in-law did all the cooking, and they are great cooks besides!! It was serene and dream-like and just a wonder.

Other than a sightseeing trip to Key West one day, we never left except to take the boat ashore to buy food and “adult beverages”. We were too drawn in by the island’s charms to leave. We walked the many paths – one through a quiet, eery mangrove swamp, dozed in the hammocks, kayaked in the sheltered cove, waded in the water to collect shells, sunbathed, fished….

We saw seagulls, pelicans, egrets, cormorants, terns, loons, dolphins, many varieties of snapper, barracuda, manta rays, hermit crabs everywhere, and even iguanas swimming and sunning! It is a destination well worth visiting and one of the best vacations any of us have ever had! Go there yourself someday if you can, as we certainly plan to return.

So what does all this have to do with Working From Home? Well, now for a surprise statement. Do you know what the next best thing is to being marooned on a tropical island? Working from home! I could see the dread my sister and brother-in-law felt at the prospect of returning to the “real world” and to their jobs. And neither of them hates their job, they just resented that loss of feeling free that the island delivered.

In contrast, I work from home, and my husband is retired….so we feel free all the time. But we still wouldn’t mind being marooned on a tropical island.
